Dr. William Nation

PhD

Will Nation is a licensed psychologist and staff clinician at Johns Hopkins University Counseling Center, where he provides individual and group therapy and trains future psychologists. He also runs a private practice with a focus on long-term depth work, particularly with LGBTQ+ and neurodivergent clients. Will is known for integrating pop culture and nerdy storytelling into his clinical approach—often using media, fandom, and tabletop role-playing games as tools for identity exploration, connection, and healing.

He is a founding editorial board member of Board Game Academics, a published author on TTRPGs in therapy, social isolation, and the psychology of fandom, and a frequent speaker at both academic conferences and fandom conventions. His current projects include therapeutic RPG world design, narrative-based outreach programming, and a group therapy model based on Stardew Valley. Will is especially interested in existential-humanist approaches, play as a vehicle for transformation, and helping clients become the main characters in their own stories.
